Rising Above the Fray

Matthew 12:22-30; Joshua 5:10-13

The gospel passage relates to Jesus’ reversal of the devil’s work (the blind, mute demoniac) through healing. A controversy, or a “fray” ensues. Jesus demonstrates how to rise above the contentiousness which frequently mars our lives. . .how to avoid the “tongue sin” of fearful, angry, insecure speech. It helps if we can identify the “Pharisee within” and, if we ask Jesus to help us rule over that spirit, we will experience more peace, wholeness, relational well-being.
The Joshua piece reminds us that God always has a third perspective–we should seek that wisdom from above about those we are locked in controversy with. The commonplace of deliverance ministry is introduced, rescuing it from the extreme and bizarre.
Then, with self-control, peace and divine wisdom, we can rise above the fray and give no opportunity to the devil to trouble, torment, or afflict us through loose speech.

There it is: Pray more, say less and trust that Jesus can do the rest.
